KwaZulu-Natal’s manufacturing sector is the second largest in the country behind Gauteng’s and accounts for around 20% of total provincial employment. The manufacturing sector in the region is geared for exports, with nearly a third of South Africa's manufactured exports being produced in KwaZulu-Natal. 

The largest manufacturing industries are the automobile and components sector, pulp and paper products, chemicals and petrochemicals as well as food and beverages.  The initiatives to boost manufacturing through the creation of special economic zones such as the DubeTradePort and in Richards Bay will be discussed at Manufacturing Indaba KwaZulu-Natal .
